Why shouldn't I operate the drives in PIO or MDMA mode?

The PIO modes (0-4) are old, obsolete techniques. Multiword DMA (0-2) is the predecessor of Ultra DMA (0-5) and was never widely implemented. PIO and MDMA don't have a Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) for error detection and correction. Thus it's always recommended that you use UDMA when possible.
