I recieve the error message:'drive is not compatible in read mode normal'.

That indicates that you have activated software error correction only. Pease change to hardware again. Modern drives from Plextor or LiteOn for example do not support that. Another cause could be that you inserted a DVD. CloneCD does not handle DVDs.
